Gender Stereotypes Tips/Questions

Girls and women are frequently expected to behave nicely, dress in stereotypically feminine ways, and provide for others. Men are typically supposed to be powerful, combative, and brave. Gender role expectations exist in every country, ethnic group, and culture, but they can vary greatly among them.

Some Gender Stereotype Questions
  • When you hear: "Act like a Lady", "Be a Man" What comes to your mind?
  • What kinds of things are boys and girls told to do as "good" boys and "good" girls?
  • Is it true that dresses and other items usually considered to be "girl's attire" shouldn't be worn by boys?
  • Do you believe that kids who play with toys made for the opposite sex receive different treatment from kids who play with toys that are more appropriate for their gender? If not, why not?
  • Do you believe that gender stereotyping is present in children's movies today more or less than it was then? If not, why not?
